Narendra Modi (Cricket) Stadium

The title of the world’s largest cricket stadium is currently held by Narendra Modi Stadium. The stadium holds two worldwide records, “the world’s largest cricket stadium and the second-largest playing field”.

Located in Ahmedabad, India the stadium has been renamed the Motera Cricket Stadium as Narendra Modi Stadium. Indian President Ramnath Kobind has inaugurated the Narendra Modi Stadium stadium.

As of 2021, The Narendra Modi Stadium is the largest cricket stadium in the world, with a seating capacity of 132,000. It is owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association and is a venue for Test, ODI, and T20 cricket matches.

The Narendra Modi Stadium was built on the banks of the Sabarmati River on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. Initially, the Gujarat government built the stadium with a capacity of 49,000 spectators on just 50 acres of land.

In 2015, the stadium was a regular venue for Test and limited-overs cricket. Later, the Gujarat Cricket Association decided to renovate the stadium and make it the largest cricket stadium in the world. It was restructured at an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore.

Reconstruction was completed five years later and now has a capacity of 132,000 spectators, more than the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The stadium currently has state-of-the-art floodlights and covered stands with four dressing rooms and six indoor practice pitches.

Built with a wide 63 acres of space, the stadium has 4 entrances and the ground is 180 yards x 150 yards. The stadium features a 360-degree unobstructed view of the field, which enhances the viewing experience for fans.

Construction History of the Ground:

The stadium was built by the Shashi Prabhu (Indian Architecture Company) on November 12, 1983. Initially, the number of seats in the stadium was 49,000.

After the 2006 edition, the stadium became the focal venue of the ICC Champions Trophy, and five out of 15 games were hosted. The stadium was renovated mainly to complete the hosting of the Champions Trophy tournament. Floodlights and covered stands were introduced in the stadium as part of the renovation program by adding three new pitches and a new outfield.

The stadium was completely demolished in October 2015 to be rebuilt. Gujarat Cricket Association president and then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi had given the idea of building a new stadium.
